Oak Learners offers private 1:1 music lessons.  We provide a learning space that works with your child’s personal style to nurture their strengths and interests.

Private music lessons are available to learners of all ages, from young to old, in a variety of disciplines, including Piano, Guitar, Voice, Ukulele, Drums, Percussion, and Composition. Students are placed with a music instructor who is a professional in their field and who loves inspiring a love of music in their students. Our music lessons are a unique blend of music theory that includes music that children will love to practice.

Why Oak Learners

We provide a learning space that works with your child's personal style, nurturing their strengths and interests 

Private lessons are open to learners of all ages, in a range of disciplines including Piano, Guitar, Voice, Ukulele, Drums, Percussion, and Composition. Every student is placed with a professional music instructor who loves inspiring a love of music, blending real music theory with pieces kids actually want to practice.

How it works

1. Submit your inquiry form Let us know you're ready to start! Once we receive your form, we'll work with you to design a personalized music program for your child(ren).

2. Complete the student intake questionnaire. We'll reply to your inquiry with a link to a short questionnaire; this helps us understand your goals so we can assign the best-fit music teacher.

3. Connect with our music director. Our music director reaches out within 24–48 hours to find the optimal schedule and set up a meet & greet with your new teacher at a time that works for you.

4. Purchase lesson credits Before lessons begin, purchase credits towards your sessions. Credits can be bought in bulk and refilled anytime.

A few things to know:

  • Lessons are scheduled at the same time each week for consistency.
  • Communication books track lesson content and keep parents and teachers connected.
  • Arrive 5 minutes early, at the start or end of a lesson, to check in with the teacher or reach out anytime by email.

Specialties

Ages: 4 through Adult

Younger students (ages 4–6) start with a "Music Experience" term a chance for us to get to know their skill level and explore different instruments and general music theory before specializing.

Students ages 6–16 are encouraged to focus on one instrument, though every teacher is multi-instrumental and happy to help students of any age explore new musical interests.

Monday–Friday 3:00–8:00pm · Saturday 10:00am–1:00pm

Every teacher has their own availability within these hours. Once we know your child's goals, our Music Director will match them with the teacher whose schedule and specialty fit best.

Aaron De Melo

Extra-curricular Programming Coordinator

 

Aaron has nearly 10 years of experience teaching in the private sector, specializing in supporting students with exceptionalities such as ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. He has worked with learners ages 4–16 and delivered programs aligned with the Science of Reading and Structured Inquiry, including Orton‑Gillingham, Direct Instruction, and JUMP Math. Alongside his teaching, Aaron pursued professional singing and studied at The Royal Conservatory of Music. He holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and a certificate from the Institute for Orton‑Gillingham Educators. Aaron joined Oak Learners in September 2023.

Karen Maktabi

Tutor and Music Teacher

 

 

Karen is an English and French tutor, as well as a singer and guitarist passionate about fostering creativity, confidence, and curiosity in every learner. Recently graduated from the University of Toronto, she majored in Diaspora and Transnational Studies, where she explored how culture, identity, and creativity shape the way we communicate and connect.

Karen has experience co-facilitating Theory of Knowledge (TOK) classes for the International Baccalaureate program at Toronto French School, where she discovered the joy of guiding students to think critically and engage deeply with ideas. At Oak Learners, Karen brings her interdisciplinary background and love of the arts to create an inclusive, student-driven learning environment. Whether teaching English, French, or music, she encourages her students to explore their voices—literally and figuratively—and to approach learning with curiosity and confidence.
